“Dieter, Dieter trick, trick, Dieter trick,” the chorus drowned out my silent cry for anonymity.
I had nowhere to hide. I was going to be exposed for the uninvited, over- eager newbie that I was. Dieter’s recognition, and the response, was instantaneous. The hunter had spotted his prey; I wasn’t going to avoid being swallowed up in his net. Dieter doubled down on the puck and began swinging the hockey stick backward and forwards with a fury. His pace increased, and so did the frenzy of the guys who were chasing him. They charged down the middle of the ice, howling fiendishly in the wind.
“Dieter, Dieter trick, trick, Dieter trick.”
