A Look Back in Time, Vol. I

Excerpt

As I turned the corner at the bottom of the hill, I entered the cobblestone roadway, which curved around the outskirts of our apartment complex. There was a bright light shining in my eyes from the corner post that marked the beginning of the street. For the briefest of moments, I couldn’t see a thing. Then, I heard the horn blow and wheels screech. I looked right into the jaws of death. I was headed straight for a military personnel carrier three sizes bigger than a Ford F150. I hit the brakes, braced myself, and waited for the truck to wipe me out.

“Dieter, Dieter trick, trick, Dieter trick,” the chorus drowned out my silent cry for anonymity.

I had nowhere to hide. I was going to be exposed for the uninvited, over- eager newbie that I was. Dieter’s recognition, and the response, was instantaneous. The hunter had spotted his prey; I wasn’t going to avoid being swallowed up in his net. Dieter doubled down on the puck and began swinging the hockey stick backward and forwards with a fury. His pace increased, and so did the frenzy of the guys who were chasing him. They charged down the middle of the ice, howling fiendishly in the wind.

“Dieter, Dieter trick, trick, Dieter trick.”

I met Bernard Lee at the NHS reunion in Denver. He gave me his first book and asked me to review a chapter in his second. He is a great writer, who has the ability to melodiously take you "Back in Time"! After reading his newest work, I can tell you that Bernard has truly succeeded in recreating a most wondrous retrospect of military brat life..."
